Saturday, November 7, 2009 I attended the Florida Music Conference that was held by music veteran Doc Wynters (Clear Channel). This conference was full of GREAT information for it’s attendees. There were several different panels held from record labels, to radio, etc.
I went to the record label panel and there were some heavy hitters/decision makers from Universal, Capitol, Def Jam, Interscope, Atlantic, Asylum, Koch and so on. There were also several artists in attendance including Toni Braxton, Cash Money’s Baby, Juvenile and more.
It was really cool cus’ they provided a wealth of information to the people attending, then they did a Q& A (question and answer) Session and at the end of it all they had a demo listening session where people were able to sit with these label executives and play two songs and get their songs critiqued, etc.
I was tweeting different stuff from the conference and people asked that I do a post on it, so here it is. Some very good advice that was delivered is listed below…
DISCLAIMER: THESE ARE TWEETS PEOPLE SO YOU HAVE 2 DEAL WITH THE ABBREVIATIONS, YALL KNOW HOW TWITTER DO YOU!
- Dude from Def Jam just said 4 every1 who says/thinks thyr that hot, if u was “that hot” we wouldv found u by now….DAMN! How real is that
- Get ur block hot, get ur city hot, get ur area hot & the labels will findu & 1 Record doesn’t make u hot…WOW! Real talk
- It takes a body of records to go on stage – 1 hot record don’t mean shit
- A hot records means nothn, I’ll buy that hot record & give it 2 a hot artist- def jam exec
- Dude said if ur a writer contact ASCAP or BMI 1st cus thyll sign u & sell ur records quicker than a label
- Dude just said the ONLY genre still selling physical records cds is R&B, hip hop has gone digital ppl need 2 know that
- Tech9 gets no radio play but he is the most successful indie artist out, he has his own lane
- Dude just said uhav 2 decide do u want 2b famous or do u want 2 make a living, u can make a great living & not be known
- Chamillionaire makes more $ on his mixtapes than his records
- He said u can make more $ selling 20k cds n ur home mkt, u got 2 sell @ least 500k w a major 2 make any $ & u still won’t make that much
- Dude that gave Bobby V his deal said he makes more $ NOW retains ownership of his masters & everything than he ever made at DefJam
- Guy just askd about 360 deals, dude from label said if u don’t want a 360 u don’t want a deal, not gonna happen 4u
- Record company is nothing but a big BANK & they want thr $ back… I told yall that a long time ago
- Dude said Drake came 2 every label on the panel & they all turned him down, not cus he wasn’t talented but cus they aint no what 2do w him
- If ur a writer u HAV2 understand publishing, that’s the biggest place u can get raped cus ur not performn the song so ifu givup pub ur fkd
- The guy that did Thriller w michael jackson gets 2 million every October alone for pub on that record
- Def jam guy said if he had 2b anything hed b a writer over an artist
- Diane Warren is the biggest writer her pub is worth half a billion, she owns ALL her publishing
- No recoupment on publishing….I’m thinking artists need 2 study the publishing game & master it, it can b the dif between rich & poor
The funny thing to me is that EVERYONE at that panel wanted to be an artist and no one wanted to work on the back end, when will yall people learn, there is SOOOOOO much money on the other side and the odds are against you being famous, but hey do you.
I’m gonna’ leave yall with this….. I bet my last breath Clive Davis has more money than probably all of the artists he’s signed. Yall know where I’m going with this….. GET SOME DAMN BUSINESS ‘BOUT YOURSELVES and let this “famous” sh*t go.
I heard they’re thinking about taking this conference on the road so if it comes to your town and you’re interested in the music business, I suggest you attend, very good info.
